Our Charlotte chiropractor team is highly trained and experienced in the evaluation and treatment in a variety of disorders affecting the human body. Back pain, however, is certainly one of the most common reasons our patients seek our help. We work with people of all ages, backgrounds, and health histories to get them lasting pain relief so that they can return to their daily activities and maximize their function in every area of life.
Your back is a highly nuanced system of nerves, muscles, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels, and other connective tissues. From your neck (cervical spine) all the way down to your lower back (lumbar spine), these structures must work together to ensure optimal health and function.
Back pain is consistently listed as one of the most common causes of disability. Other symptoms that often accompany this disorder include stiffness in the back; pain, weakness, numbness, and/or tingling in one or both legs (if a spinal nerve is involved); decreased tolerance to sitting and/or standing; hamstring muscle shortness. Certain movements, such as bending forward or bending backward, can make the symptoms better or worse, depending on the underlying cause. Exact symptoms vary from person to person.
Broader health conditions like osteoarthritis, herniated discs, bulging discs, spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, degenerative joint disease, bone fractures, muscle spasms, and spinal nerve entrapment can cause or contribute to back pain anywhere in the spine. Additionally, some disorders of the spine are specific to certain spinal regions, whether it's the neck, mid-back (thoracic spine), lower back, or pelvis:
So, what's causing all these problems? Auto accidents, work- and sports-related injuries, and slips, trips, and falls are often the initial causative factor. In other cases, back pain can develop due to a lifetime of poor body mechanics and repetitive movements which, overtime, strain the spine and lead to a painful injury. This explains how some people say they "threw their back out" doing something simple like picking up a golf ball or getting out of bed in the morning--quite appropriately "the straw that broke the camel's back."
Lifestyle factors, including psychological stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking, sedentary behavior, physically demanding jobs, and overweight/obesity can also contribute to a person's back pain or make them more likely to develop back pain. Acknowledging and addressing these concerns on a case-by-case basis will be pivotal for optimal treatment and symptom management.
