#1: What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a contemporary pain management technique based on Ancient Chinese Medicine. According to Ancient Chinese tradition, pain and illness are caused by blockages in the body’s life force, known as the “qi”. Acupuncture uses long, thin needles to stimulate the flow of qi through the body along specific meridians, also known as energy pathways. Recent scientific research has found that the Ancient Chinese concept of the qi is very similar to our understanding of the central nervous system. Stimulating specific pressure points along the body produces physiological and neurological changes in the central nervous system, such as increasing a patient’s pain threshold.
#2: Is acupuncture painful?
In general, most of our patients find acupuncture to be very relaxing. We use long, thin sterilized needles to stimulate specific pressure points on the body. While you may experience a minor “prick” sensation when the needle enters the pressure point, this sensation is only temporary. Many of our patients find treatment to be so relaxing that they actually doze off during a session!
#3: What does acupuncture treat?
Studies show that acupuncture is beneficial for a number of different conditions. In addition to pain management for back pain, neck pain, migraines and headaches, acupuncture may be beneficial for chemotherapy-induced dizziness and nausea, stress and anxiety, and pregnancy-related pain.
#4: Am I a good candidate for acupuncture treatments?
You may be a good candidate if acupuncture if you are looking for a drug-free pain management alternative. Many of our patients are frustrated with traditional approaches to pain relief that rely on prescription painkillers to temporarily numb pain, but are unable to provide long-term relief. While acupuncture is completely safe – we only use thin, sterilized needles – not everyone is a good candidate for treatment. For example, if you have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, acupuncture may not be right for you. Prior to beginning treatment, please discuss your full medical history with our team. You are also welcome to consult your primary care physician.
#5: Is acupuncture a long-term pain management solution?
Acupuncture is an all-natural, drug-free approach to pain management. Since every individual experiences pain differently, our treatment program will be tailored to your body’s specific needs. With regular treatment, many patients find that they no longer require pain medication. Our goal with treatment is to effectively manage your pain and complement other drug-free therapies, such as chiropractic adjustments.
#6: Are there any reasons why I should not receive acupuncture?
Not all individuals are good candidates for acupuncture treatments. For example, if you have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, you should not receive acupuncture treatment. Prior to beginning treatment, it is important to discuss the treatment’s goals with our wellness team, along with a full medical history. This will help us best determine whether treatment is right for your health needs.
#7: What should I expect during a treatment session?
At Omni Wellness Center, our wellness team goes to great lengths to ensure all our patients enjoy a quiet, relaxing treatment experience. Most sessions last between 15 and 30 minutes. During the session, you will lie down on a table in our quiet room and our acupuncturist will place thin, sterilized needles in specific pressure points along the body. These pressure points will correspond with your pain management needs or a specific health complaint. Generally, we find that patients benefit from a series of treatments over several weeks or months, depending on their health needs.
